Our School
Established in 1982 by Shihan Van Bushnell and his wife, Mrs. Pam Bushnell, USA Martial Arts has been serving the Birmingham area for over 35 years and has a long standing tradition of excellence. In 2012, Sensei Keith MacConkey was appointed to the position of Head Instructor by Shihan Van Bushnell and continues the school’s dedication to quality. As a member school of the USA Martial Arts Federation and the Chudokai Aikido Federation International, we have a proud heritage as part of a martial arts family linking Korea, Japan, the United States and Canada.
Our classes in traditional Aikido, Karate, Judo, Iaido, and Taekwondo all maintain the core characteristics of each art, preserving the effectiveness and unique qualities of each discipline while passing them on to the next generation. At USA Martial Arts we seek to create a positive and uplifting learning environment where students of all ages and experience levels may come to enjoy the many benefits of the martial arts.
USA Martial Arts is located on Shades Crest Road in Hoover’s Bluff Park area. The school is nestled behind one of the original homes built along the crest of Shades Mountain in the 1800’s. It’s unique, secluded campus creates a peaceful, family atmosphere. The training facility features a fully matted floor that makes learning safe for all ages.
